Action Plan
In order to sustain the momentum created in this inaugural course, I am committed to the following actions that I believe addresses how an individual can begin to impact change for this complex issue at a local level.
Given the impact of global warming on food security, our family is very conscientious of conserving energy by taking public transportation and walking or biking whenever possible. In understanding the shocking fact that close to 50% of the food waste occurs in households, we are now more conscientious to prevent food waste and will support local farmers over big box stores. This summer, I plan on building container gardens in my backyard to grow root vegetables and donate the crop to local refugees.
I was highly motivated by our pitch project, so in the Fall of 2017, I hope to form our proposed Student Union Club. In order to achieve the required 20 people to register as a club, I would like to leverage the #UNIV201UC twitter handle to engage this year's participants as well as future students. We would sign up other interested students and faculty during clubs week. The Awareness Campaign would entail distributing information on campus food insecurity, highlighting local food resources and partnering with Food Nutrition students for education component. Campus IT would be contacted to house the completed website on the official UofC website and the kept alive by club members. The club could also work in partnership with Hunger Week which is tentatively set for Sept 18-23, 2017. During this time, we could organize a donation drive to benefit the Campus Food Bank by motivating students to consider donating funds and to challenge family members to pack a lunch and donate funds instead. I think it would be fantastic to invite the President to share her experiences of trying to make ends meet with a typical food hamper for a month and challenge the various Deans to raise funds for the food bank. In the future, my hope is that the club will be active and engaged in the community - bringing new learning experiences and promoting food security.
The next step personally would be to get engaged with a letter writing campaign to local papers to demand that our politicians meet our ethical obligation to fund humanitarian efforts and focus editorials on the root causes of food insecurity – urbanization, economic circumstances, and gender inequality. I believe that our foreign aid should be in the form of cash and training to encourage small-scale farmers to develop the resources and tools to ensure fully functioning world marketplace. My personal opinion is that all trade subsidies to large agribusiness should be eliminated. More locally, I hope to discuss land allocation policies to support organizations like Grow Calgary, so that they can support the Food Bank.
In conclusion, I hope that by remaining committed to focused and sustainable actions, both professionally and personally, I can impact real change in helping to achieve the goal of zero hunger in the world.
